Tips for dealing witha temporary power cut at your business location

Your business will temporarily be without electricity while we carry out maintenance on the power grid in your area. This maintenance helps keep the grid safe and reliable. The tips below will help you prepare and reduce disruption to your business operations.

Prepare in advance

A few simple preparations can help reduce inconvenience during the power outage.

Arrange backup power

  • Rent an emergency generator if your business cannot operate without electricity.
  • If you already have an emergency generator, make sure you have enough fuel.

Prepare your building

  • Turn up the heating the day before if cold weather is expected.
  • Lower the temperature of your fridge and freezer one day before the power outage.
  • If your business is located on a high floor, make sure you have enough drinking water. You may temporarily have no water from the tap during the power outage.

Inform your customers

  • Let customers know in advance if they will only be able to pay with cash during the power outage.

Check your equipment

  • Inform your alarm monitoring company about the power outage.
  • Take steps to secure your business if security cameras will stop working.
  • Fully charge laptops, mobile phones, tablets and power banks.
  • If you have sensitive equipment, protect it from power fluctuations.

On the day of the power outage

Keep your building accessible

  • Do not use the lift shortly before the electricity is switched off.
  • Make sure the lift is on the ground floor.
  • Set automatic doors to manual operation.
  • Please note that entrance and corridor lighting may also be unavailable.

Keep products and workspaces at the right temperature

  • Keep fridges and freezers closed during the power outage.
  • Keep windows, doors and curtains closed if it is cold outside.
  • Heat water in advance for coffee or tea and store it in a thermos flask.

Use equipment safely

  • If you need internet access, use the hotspot on your mobile phone. Your Wi‑Fi router will not work without electricity.
  • Unplug sensitive equipment before the electricity returns.
  • Do you have solar panels or another system that generates electricity? Switch it off before the maintenance work starts so our technicians can work safely on the power grid.

Keep food safe

  • Food stays fresh for about 4 hours in a closed fridge.
  • Food stays frozen for about 24 hours in a half-full freezer.
  • Food stays frozen for about 48 hours in a full freezer.
